Bettie Austin Jackson age 72 of New Bern, NC passed away April 27, 2015 at the Home Place in New Bern, North Carolina. She was born January 22, 1943 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Elmer B. Austin, Sr & Rosie Elvin Martin Austin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Warren Jackson. Bettie graduated from Ferrum Junior College and received her teaching certificate from Lynchburg College. She taught school in Roanoke for several years before moving to Rome, Georgia. In Rome she took up the game of golf. In just a few years she became one of the top 5 women’s golfer’s in the state of Georgia. She served on the board of directors of the women’s golf association of Georgia for several years. Bettie and her good friend, Margaret Martin also of Rome teamed up to win most of the 2 lady events they played in Georgia and Florida. Bettie was also the state women’s Champion in Georgia. Bettie is survived by her brother E. B. Austin, Jr. & his wife, Margaret; her nephew, Taylor B. Austin & wife, Joya; a stepson, Bradford A. Shadday and wife, Christy & grandsons, Tanner and Spencer Shadday of Rome, Georgia as well as well as her grand niece Emerson L. Austin of Buies Creek, North Carolina. The family request that in lieu of flower’s donations be made to the Bethesda United Methodist Church building fund, 1355 Preston Mill Road, Huddleston, VA 24104 or the Alzheimers Association, 1022 Commerce Street, Lynchburg, VA 24504.. A funeral service will be conducted on Friday May 1, 2015 at 11.00 AM at Bethesda United Methodist Church with Rev. Sue Keen officiating. Interment will follow at the church Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
